AR and VR 101: A Primer on the What, Why, and How

Have you heard about Augmented Reality (AR) or Virtual Reality (VR) and are wondering how these fast-growing technologies can fit into your overall learning strategy? In this primer, we’ll discuss at a high level what are AR and VR, which situations are best suited for AR and VR, and how you and your clients’ organizations can iteratively develop AR and VR capabilities and organizational experience.

In this session, Lisa and Devon will:

  • Describe at a high level what are AR and VR, while developing familiarity with the most-used hardware and software development tools.
  • Showcase common training use cases through specific industry examples of successful implementations.
  • Highlight the full set of skills required to effectively implement AR and VR at different levels of immersion, interactivity, and scalability.
  • Guide development of AR and VR capabilities and organizational experience through a detailed roadmap from “Discovery” to “Pilot” to “Scale”.

About the Presenters:

Lisa Toenniges, owner and chief executive officer of Innovative Learning Group, a company she founded in March 2004.

Devon Merz, Innovative Learning Group’s development lead for augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR).

A dynamic and respected leader, Lisa has more than 30 years ofexperience in the performance improvement industry and has consulted with many Fortune 1000 companies about their learning and performance strategies and solutions.

ILG was born out of Lisa’s passion for building a business, providing for her employees, and doing what is right for clients. Her entrepreneurial spirit, positive outlook, and hands-on leadership style have been the drivers behind ILG’s profitable annual compound growth.

Lisa has a master’s degree in instructional technology from Wayne State University in Detroit and a bachelor’s degree in music education from Michigan State University.

Devon Merz brings to ILG his vast experience in designing and implementing strategic digital solutions across a wide range of industries, including aerospace, automotive, education, energy, healthcare, telecommunications, and utilities. Devon has worked in both corporate strategy at the Boston Consulting Group and software research as a lead software engineer in the Englebretson computer-vision lab at Rice University.

He is an XR Terra Certified Developer and an active member of IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers).

Devon graduated from Rice University in Houston, Texas, with honors, receiving a bachelor’s degree in electrical and computer engineering, a minor in business, and a distinction in research.
